Abstract

The State Fisheries Management Area of the Republic of Indonesia (WPP-NRI) is a strategic area managed by the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries for various fisheries management activities, such as fishing, aquaculture, conservation, research and development. This research aims to determine the potential fishing zones (ZPPI) in the Sulawesi Sea and North Halmahera Sea waters by utilizing remote sensing technology, namely Aqua MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) satellite image data. The research method used is quantitative method, which involves collecting and analyzing numerical data to identify oceanographic patterns, trends and relationships. The results showed that the distribution of chlorophyll-a values in the study waters in the period January to December 2023 had an average of 0.04 mg/m³. The lowest value was recorded in July and November at 0.03 mg/m³, while the highest value was recorded in February at 0.07 mg/m³. In contrast, the average sea surface temperature (SST) in the study area was 24.47℃, with the lowest value in February at 23.80℃ and the highest value in June, October and December at 26.66℃. This study illustrates that variations in oceanographic parameters, such as chlorophyll-a and sea surface temperature, can be used to identify potential fishing zones in WPP-NRI areas. This information is expected to support sustainable and efficient fisheries management, and contribute to the optimal utilization of fisheries resources in the Sulawesi Sea and North Halmahera Sea areas.
